Description
The Secche della Meloria are located off the coast of Livorno, in the Ligurian Sea, and are a shallow marine area known for their natural and historical significance. The shallow, rocky seabed hosts a rich ecosystem, with algae, sponges, crustaceans, and numerous fish species.
At the center of the shoals stands the Torre della Meloria, an ancient stone structure built in the 18th century to warn sailors of the danger. The area was also the site of naval battles, including the famous Battle of Meloria in 1284 between Genoa and Pisa.
Today, the Secche della Meloria are part of a marine protected area, important for biodiversity conservation and popular with divers and marine biologists.
